Rotary Club of Taipei Metro East

Club history

The club's history, written by 張宗達 (P.P. Ortho).

In September 1993, three former members of 台北西區扶輪社—鄔宗明 (Alex), 張宗達 (Ortho) and 陳肇榮 (Ronald)—believed that, in Taiwan's rapidly changing and complex society, Rotary's ideals could best be sustained by returning to its beginnings: the sincerity, simplicity and friendship of Paul Harris and the other founders. With the call to return to Rotary's origins and seek its truth, C.P. Alex brought together people from different fields for round-table discussions of Rotary's basic ideals. Their friendship and shared conviction led them to decide to establish a new club.

Finding a sponsor club proved difficult at the end of December. In February 1994, 台北大安扶輪社 agreed to serve as sponsor. District Governor 陳宏輝 (Philip) appointed 陳文哲 (P.P. Book) as the governor's special representative and 丁玉山 (P.P. David) as the sponsor club's representative, with the sponsor's past presidents and president serving as advisers. They attended in turn to explain Rotary's spirit, knowledge, four avenues of service and the Four-Way Test. The provisional Taipei Metro East club was established on 31 March 1994, selected its directors and officers, and began service projects, joint meetings, visits, ladies' evenings and participation in the district conference. An application for the new club was submitted to RI on 1 May.

The history records that RI notified the club of charter approval on 31 May 1994. The charter ceremony took place at the Grand Hyatt on 6 June. Taipei Metro East became the 60th club in RI District 3480, with 34 charter members. At the June 1994 RI Convention in Taipei, RI President Robert R. Barth personally presented the charter certificate to C.P. Alex. The author describes this as an honour in the club's history, and records successive presidents' and members' commitment to learning, service and fellowship, recognition from the district and other clubs, and a continuing tradition of community service.

Date discrepancy: the club history records the RI charter notification as 1994-05-31, while the district's current-year profile lists 1994-05-17. Both dates are retained; no single date has been inferred.
